The Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) is a CITB-accredited course for site supervisors, and for anyone holding supervisory responsibility for three or more employees. Delivered online over two consecutive days by a CITB-qualified instructor, it covers the knowledge needed to supervise a construction site safely.
The course is structured across five modules covering legal responsibilities and management, health and welfare, general site safety, high-risk activities and environmental awareness. This includes the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, Construction Design Management (CDM), statutory inspections and checks, risk assessments and method statements, reporting accidents and ill health, site inductions and toolbox talks, working at height, excavations and confined spaces.
Assessment is by an exam of 22 multiple-choice questions and three short written questions, with a minimum pass mark of 80%. Four safety-critical questions must be answered correctly in order to pass. Anyone who does not pass first time is offered an immediate resit on the same day.
This SSSTS course is aimed at site supervisors, and at anyone with supervisory responsibility for three or more employees who has at least 12 months of site experience. It also suits those preparing to step into a supervisory role for the first time.
Holding SSSTS demonstrates to employers and clients that you have the skills to supervise a construction site safely and in line with the CITB standard, and gives a competitive edge over those without it. It can also form part of a pathway towards a gold CSCS card.
The certificate is valid for five years, after which an SSSTS Refresher is available. Courses run Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm across two consecutive days, and are delivered by Zoom, so there is no travel or time away from site beyond the course itself.
