The Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) is a CITB-accredited course for site managers, and for those preparing to step up into a site management role. Delivered online over five days by a CITB-qualified instructor, it gives candidates the knowledge to manage and implement health, safety and environmental systems on a construction site.
The course is structured across five modules covering legal responsibilities and management, health and welfare, general site safety, high-risk activities and environmental awareness. This includes the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, Construction Design Management (CDM), risk assessments and method statements, site inductions, working at height, excavations, confined spaces and temporary works.
Assessment is by an exam of 18 multiple-choice questions and seven short written questions, with a minimum pass mark of 81%. Candidates who score above 72% are offered an immediate resit on the same day.
This SMSTS course is aimed at site managers, project managers and supervisors who are ready to take on greater responsibility for safety on site, and at those about to move into a site management position.
SMSTS is one of the most widely recognised qualifications in UK construction. Holding it demonstrates to employers and clients that you have the skills to manage a site safely and in line with the CITB standard, and gives a competitive edge over those without it.
The certificate is valid for five years, after which a two-day SMSTS Refresher is required. The course runs from 9am to 5pm each day and is delivered by Zoom, so there is no travel or time away from site beyond the course itself.
